Research Presentation by Brian Maitland

Brian Maitland was raised in Jackson, TN, and has been living in Southwest Colorado for the past three years. He is a senior in the Anthropology Department at Fort Lewis College, and will earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spring 2019. His educational experience includes field work, lab work, mapping (GIS), and assisting with Tribal consultations. In December 2018, Brian presented his senior research, which focused on basketry and how woven items can show a network between groups of the Southwest and their environment. Pitch coated baskets have captivated him ever since he saw his first one at the Southern Ute Museum. His senior research will be the focus of his presentation.

Brian is an intern at the Center of Southwest Studies, tasked with inventorying and cataloguing the Center’s basket collections
